The University of South Florida [USF] is one of the largest metropolitan universities in the southeast and
among the 15 largest universities in the United States.
The Huntington's
Disease Society of America [HDSA] Huntington’s Disease Center of Excellence at USF
is located in the University of South Florida's Health Sciences Center on the main Medical School campus in the New Tampa
area, about 20 miles northeast of downtown Tampa, Florida. The drive to the USF clinic from Orlando is one hour and two hours
from Gainesville.
The HDSA Huntington's Disease Center of Excellence at USF promotes and supports both clinical
and basic HD research, provides aid to families in coping with the multi-faceted problems presented by HD and educates the
families, the public and health care professionals about Huntington’s Disease.
Our relationship with the HDSA is of utmost importance in accomplishing these goals through grants, fund
raising, education and awareness. |
The USF HD Clinic
assisted more than 250 patients with Huntington's Disease and their families from across Florida since 1999. As a
HDSA Center of Excellence, USF has become an infrastructure to support state-of-the-art multidisciplinary
care for patients with Huntington's disease, those at risk for the disease, and their families.
It is our hope, as an HDSA Center
of Excellence, more families
living with HD will benefit from the support and services that the Center can provide.
Our core staff includes three Movement Disorders specialists, Dr. Sanchez-Ramos, Dr. Hauser
and Dr. Zesiewicz, as well as a full-time clinical coordinator and a part-time social worker.
When appropriate, patients are referred for consultation with experts in Genetic Counseling
and Testing, or for Neuro-psychological and Psychiatric evaluations.
In addition, patients are commonly referred for Physical, Occupational and Speech/Swallowing
therapy. All of these referrals are co-located on USF's campus.
Working together the HDSA Huntington's Disease Center of Excellence at USF will help HDSA become "the
voice" for all people living with Huntington's Disease in the State of Florida.
