Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD) has been the subject of extensive HGC discussion, particularly within the Genetic Testing Sub-group. The discussion was initiated in June 2000 by the ending of the consultation on PGD which was published by the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) and the Advisory Committee on Genetic Testing (ACGT).

As ACGT's successor, HGC has worked with HFEA in considering the consultation responses and drafting guidance. In December 2000 a Joint Working Party on Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis (JWP) was established to take the work forward, with members drawn from both HFEA and HGC's Genetic Testing Sub-group. The Genetic Testing Sub-group also spent the majority of two of its meetings discussing aspects of PGD and the outcome of the consultation. This resulted in an agreed HGC statement on its benefits and limitations which is given below.

A formal response to the consultation exercise was published in November 2001, and contains the Summary of Discussions and Recommendations made by the JWP, and the analysis of the resposes to the consultation carried out by the HFEA.
